Getting here
Elysium Calheta is on the south-west coast, about 45 minutes by car from Madeira airport near Funchal. Most of the way is on the VR1 expressway, so the journey is easy and fast, and the house is close to it.
The route
- From the airport, join the VR1 expressway in the direction of Funchal and Ribeira Brava, heading west.
- Stay on the VR1 past Funchal, Câmara de Lobos and Ribeira Brava as far as Ponta do Sol. This takes about 30 minutes.
- Continue along the coast, following the signs for Madalena do Mar and Calheta (Arco da Calheta).
- In Arco da Calheta, find the Hotel Engenho Velho. The street right behind it leads to the house: Elysium is the last house on Vereda dos Álamos, a very quiet street with open views of the ocean. Use the navigation pin for the last few minutes.

- Car hire
- The rental desks are in the arrivals hall at the airport. In high season, book early and choose a car that is comfortable on steep, narrow roads.
- Taxi or transfer
- Taxis and private transfers run from the airport to Calheta. Allow about 45 minutes, and agree the price before you set off.
- Bus
- Public buses run along the south coast, but a car is much more flexible.
- Shopping
- The village of Calheta, about 5 minutes away, has supermarkets, cafés and restaurants.
